Technical note
Steam-to-fuel ratio as a performance metric
Steam-to-fuel ratio (SFR) is the mass of steam produced per unit mass of fuel burned. It is the figure a plant manager already watches, because it links directly to fuel cost per tonne of steam.
Both quantities are routinely metered or weighed, so the plant's own team can check the result. SFR does need normalising for load, fuel quality and ambient conditions before two periods are compared.
Performance commitments are made per site, after assessment, on a steam-to-fuel-ratio basis.
